Golf & Onsen Japan for Two

Chiba & Kamogawa: guaranteed twosomes, 2 hours from Tokyo

Chiba holds more golf courses than any other prefecture in Japan — around 150 — warmed by the Pacific all winter. And on its southern coast, one club sells what couples actually want: plans that guarantee your twosome, some with no surcharge at all.

Prices checked 7 November 2026 from the sources listed at the end. Research figures, not live quotes — re-check before you book.

In short: Ride the Wakashio express from Tokyo to Awa-Kamogawa (1 h 50 min), stay at the Kamogawa Country Hotel on site (for two from ¥7,360 room-only) or an oceanfront onsen hotel in town (from ¥35,280 with both meals), and play Kamogawa Country Club on a guaranteed-twosome plan — weekday rounds from ¥7,500 per person. Accordia, the operator, even books in English. Playable all year.

The model plan

Day 1 Tokyo → Awa-Kamogawa by Wakashio express. Shuttle to the hotel (reserve it ahead), evening soak — ocean-view open-air baths at the town hotels, or the big bath at the on-site Country Hotel.

Day 2 A weekday guaranteed-twosome plan at Kamogawa CC. Lunch is part of the ritual here — the sit-down halfway lunch is a feature of Japanese golf days, not a delay. Back in Tokyo by evening if you must; the onsen argues for a second night.

The golf

Kamogawa Country Club — the twosome plans are the point

An Accordia-operated resort course from 1970: flat, sunny, ponds and bunkers, with a hotel on the property. What makes it this guide's Chiba pick is the booking menu: dedicated “2-sam hosho” (guaranteed twosome) plans, including no-surcharge versions — mostly weekday and half-round plans. Read the plan name carefully: on ordinary plans you may be paired or charged a supplement. And unusually for Japan, the operator runs an English booking site listing this course, with email booking as a backup. Golf in Japan rates it 4.0/5 and its English ability 3.0/5 — modest English, but a real booking channel.

Royal Star Golf Club — the Aqua-Line side

Twenty-seven beginner-friendly holes on the bay side near the Aqua-Line landing: wide fairways, bentgrass greens, weekday fees from ¥9,800 per person before extras. Its twosome and rental terms are not published in English — an agent like Nomae Golf will coordinate the booking and confirm them for you.

The stay and the soak

Sleep at the course (Country Hotel — simple, spacious, from ¥7,360 for two) or in town on the Pacific: Kamogawa Grand Hotel pairs open-air onsen with sea views from ¥35,280 for two including dinner and breakfast; Kamenoi Hotel Kamogawa adds a panoramic rooftop bath; and the splurge, Kamogawa Onsen Rian, gives all ten of its detached rooms a private open-air onsen (from ¥95,128 for two with dinner). One honesty note: the on-site Country Hotel's big bath is not marketed as a natural hot spring — for the real onsen, sleep in town.

What visitors say

Summarised from English-language sources (Wanderlog review roundups, IKYU guest reviews, JAL's Chiba golf guide, visitor golf guides) — not our own experience:

Loved: value. Reviewers of Boso's visitor-playable clubs call them “a cost-effective golf course in Chiba Prefecture”, with rounds around ¥13,000–15,000, well-kept greens and the full Japanese golf-day ritual — immaculate maintenance, attentive service, and the halfway lunch as a highlight. Kamogawa Country Hotel guests call it very comfortable, with spacious, spotless rooms.

Not loved: language and logistics. JAL's official Chiba guide warns many courses “only cater to Japanese speakers” — hence the English routes above. A Tokyo-base golf day here runs about 12 hours door to door once transfers and the hour-long lunch break are counted. At the budget end, expect small frictions: remote-control carts without GPS, and the occasional wild-boar repair patch.
