Golf & Onsen Japan for Two

Hakone Golf & Onsen: a model plan for two

Hakone is the easiest golf-and-onsen escape from Tokyo: 85 minutes to the station, an evening in a hot-spring ryokan, and a morning round under Mt. Fuji. Here is the plan we would book, with the real numbers.

Prices checked 7 November 2026 from the sources listed at the end. They are research figures, not live quotes — re-check before you book.

In short: Ride the Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto, stay the night in a Sengokuhara onsen ryokan (from about ¥46,000 for two with meals), and play Dai Hakone Country Club the next morning (about ¥29,735 per person with caddie via an overseas booking platform) — or save money at Hakone-en on Lake Ashi (about ¥10,000 per person, self-play). Golf is playable year-round in Hakone.

The model plan

Day 1 Shinjuku → Hakone-Yumoto by Romancecar (about 85 minutes). Bus or taxi up to Sengokuhara (30–45 minutes). Check in to an onsen ryokan, soak before dinner, early night.

Day 2 Breakfast, then a morning tee time at Dai Hakone Country Club — it sits in Sengokuhara itself, so the transfer is minutes. Round, lunch at the clubhouse, one more soak, and the Romancecar back to Tokyo in the afternoon.

The courses

Dai Hakone Country Club — the classic

Prince Hotels' flagship Hakone course, opened 1954 on the Sengoku highland: 18 holes, par 73, caddies included in the round. An overseas platform listed a weekday caddie-included tee time at about ¥29,735 when we checked (November 2026); other listings put the range at ¥24,000–40,000 by season. Visitors book it through overseas golf platforms or agents rather than the club directly. One caution: we could not verify a published twosome policy for this course, so confirm the 2-player terms when you book.

Hakone-en Golf Course — the friendly budget pick

On Lake Ashi, with Fuji and the lake in view from most holes. Shorter (par 71, about 5,936 yards), self-play with a cart and no caddie. Weekday rounds are listed around ¥10,000 (weekends ¥15,200–16,200). Booking platforms note that groups of two or three may incur an additional fee — check the fine print.

Do not plan around Taiheiyo Club Gotemba or Hakone Country Club: both are private, members-and-guests only.

Where to stay, and the Fuji view trap

For Dai Hakone, base in Sengokuhara: milky Owakudani-fed water, highland air, and the course on your doorstep. For Hakone-en, stay on the Lake Ashi shore. One trap for first-timers: the famous luxury ryokan area of Gora cannot see Mt. Fuji — the mountains block it. If the view matters, choose Sengokuhara or Lake Ashi.

What visitors say

Summarised from English-language reviews and trip reports (Google reviews via Wanderlog, TripAdvisor, and a first-hand report on Lonely Japan) — not our own experience:

Loved: the scenery — one Google reviewer called a Hakone course "one of the most beautiful courses I have ever played"; helpful staff who sort out rental gear for you; the novelty of self-driving GPS carts; private in-room onsen tubs at Hakone's better hotels. One 2023 report put a round, rentals and lunch for two at Hakone-en at about US$250 all-in.

Not loved: booking friction is the number-one complaint — several courses have no online booking at all, and one visitor booked through a card concierge instead. Pace of play can be slow, with waits on tees around the lunch break. Big onsen hotels feel chaotic at peak times, so soak early.
