Golf & Onsen Japan for Two

Miyazaki: winter golf at Phoenix Seagaia, for two

When Tokyo is 8°C, Miyazaki is teeing off in a light jacket. One resort holds a famous tournament course, a genuinely visitor-friendly second course, and a pine-forest onsen — the most complete golf-and-soak package in Japan, with one honest catch for couples.

Prices checked 7 November 2026 from the sources listed at the end. Research figures, not live quotes — re-check before you book.

In short: Fly Haneda → Miyazaki (1 h 45 min), stay at Phoenix Seagaia Ocean Tower (every room faces the ocean; simple plans for two around ¥38,000–42,000). Play Phoenix Country Club if you book ahead through the resort (¥31,780 per person weekdays + caddie ¥4,400) — but know that a twosome there is not guaranteed to play alone. The Tom Watson course next door (¥10,000 weekdays, cart included) is the relaxed couple's pick. Finish with a private onsen hour (¥6,000–8,000). Golf runs all year here.

The model plan

Day 1 Morning flight to Miyazaki, taxi to Seagaia (20–25 min). Afternoon: the Shosenkyu onsen in the pines, then a private bath together after dinner.

Day 2 Morning round — Phoenix CC for the bucket list, or Tom Watson for value and a guaranteed relaxed pairing. The resort's official stay-and-play package (1 night + breakfast + a round at each course) starts at ¥38,300 per person for non-members, based on two sharing.

The courses

Phoenix Country Club — book it properly, or don't

Host of the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament since 1974, walked with a caddie as standard, pines crowding every fairway. It is a membership club, but overseas visitors can play — through the resort's visitor reservation system or a stay-and-play package, booked well ahead. JNTO publishes the visitor fee at ¥31,780 on weekdays (¥41,790 holidays), caddie extra. Two things couples must know before dreaming: official terms say a 2-player round is not guaranteed as a pair — you may be joined with other players — and the clubhouse expects proper attire, including a jacket outside summer. If either bothers you, play Tom Watson and walk Phoenix's history in the clubhouse displays instead.

Tom Watson Golf Course — the couple's course

Designed by Tom Watson, tight through the same black pines, and officially priced for visitors at ¥10,000 per person on weekdays including cart and tax (¥14,000 weekends; hotel guests slightly less). From March to November it also runs floodlit “Starry Night Golf” over 9 holes — the resort literally markets it as a date round. This is where our model plan sends most couples.

The stay and the soak

The tower (renamed Phoenix Seagaia Ocean Tower in June 2025 — older English pages still say “Sheraton”) has 734 rooms and every one faces the sunrise over the Pacific. The Shosenkyu onsen sits in the pine forest beside it: a strong saline spring, big open-air baths, and two private baths for hotel guests only — Hanare-yu (up to 4 people, ¥6,000/60 min) and Oyunomiya (2 adults, ¥8,000/90 min). Book the private bath ahead; it is the couples' move after a round. Note: tattoos are refused in the shared baths, but the private baths set no such rule; and one shared bath (Shingetsu) is closed for renovation until January 2027.

Access and season

What visitors say

Summarised from English-language sources (TripAdvisor, Wanderlog's Google-review roundups, golf blogs) — not our own experience:

Loved: the tournament history you can touch in the clubhouse (Phoenix CC holds 4.3/5 on TripAdvisor); Tom Watson as “a real test, not resort fluff”; the resort mornings — one guest review says “Our only regret was staying for just one night.” The private onsen hour after a long travel day gets singled out again and again.

Not loved: value and communication at Phoenix CC at peak times — the most detailed US review (2016) describes a ~US$320 round with undisclosed tournament preparation and a full-fee cancellation charge. The tower is ageing in places, the complex is vast enough to confuse first arrivals, the shuttle is infrequent, and reviewers recommend a rental car for anything beyond the resort.

FAQ

Can overseas visitors play Phoenix Country Club?
Yes, via the resort's visitor booking or a stay-and-play package — never as a walk-up. ¥31,780 per person weekdays + about ¥4,400 caddie (checked November 2026).

Can a twosome play alone there?
Not guaranteed — official terms say 2-player rounds may be joined with others. Tom Watson next door (¥10,000 weekdays with cart) is the relaxed alternative.

When is the best season?
Year-round; winter (12–15°C highs) is the differentiator. Avoid the mid-November tournament window.

How do we get there from Tokyo?
Haneda → Miyazaki flight, about 1 h 45 min; then 20–25 minutes by taxi to the resort.

Sources checked 7 November 2026: JNTO's Japan Travel golf pages (Phoenix CC fees), Seagaia official visitor fees and package terms, Phoenix Seagaia Ocean Tower and Shosenkyu information, IKYU room rates, and visitor reviews on TripAdvisor and Wanderlog. One directory (Where2Golf) still describes Phoenix CC as members-only; the resort's own visitor reservation system and JNTO fees say otherwise — but advance booking is essential either way.
