Golf & Onsen Japan for Two

Okinawa: warm winter golf, and one real onsen

Okinawa is the outlier in this guide, and we'll say so plainly: the golf is superb and the “onsen” mostly isn't. Here is the honest version — resort golf with a guaranteed twosome, 20°C January fairways, and a final night at the island's one genuine hot spring, fifteen minutes from the airport.

Prices checked 7 November 2026 from the sources listed at the end. Research figures, not live quotes — re-check before you book.

In short: Base at Kanucha Resort in Nago and book a stay-and-play plan — it guarantees two-player self-play (weekday twosome supplement ¥5,000 per person; day-visitor rate ¥20,500). Play November–April. Then spend the last night at Ryukyu Onsen Senagajima Hotel by the airport and soak in Ryujin no Yu, a real natural hot spring (day use ¥2,000, free for guests), before a morning flight out.

The model plan

Days 1–2 Fly into Naha, shuttle or rental car north to Kanucha (about 80–90 minutes). Stay-and-play: one round per night is the standard bundle shape, and the twosome is guaranteed — no pairing anxiety. Spa and pool on the resort; this is the “soak substitute,” not a hot spring.

Last night Drive back south to Senagajima Hotel, soak in Ryujin no Yu as the sun goes down over the East China Sea, and fly out next morning — the airport is 10–15 minutes away.

ItemIndicative cost
Kanucha GC, weekday day-visitor, 4-player rate (per person) + golf tax¥20,500 + ¥960
Twosome supplement on stay-and-play plans, weekday (per person)¥5,000
Club rental / shoe rental at Kanucha¥4,400 / ¥2,200
PGM Golf Resort Okinawa, weekday (per person, sources vary)≈ ¥6,800–12,000
Shurei CC, weekday value pick (per person)from ¥5,450
Ryujin no Yu day bathing (per adult; free for Senagajima guests)¥2,000

Hotel rates swing hard by season: aggregator snapshots in November 2026 showed Kanucha Bay from about US$101 a night and Senagajima from about US$112–146. Treat those as weather vanes, not quotes.

The golf

Kanucha Golf Course — the flagship, and the twosome guarantee

The main island's best-known championship resort course: forest on the way out, ocean on the way in, and an English fee page — a rarity in Japan. Day visitors pay ¥20,500 per person on weekdays at the four-player rate (smaller groups pay more per person), but the smarter route is a stay-and-play plan: guests pay far less per round, and the plans explicitly guarantee two-player self-play, with a ¥5,000 per-person weekday supplement. Rentals are published (¥4,400 clubs, ¥2,200 shoes) and a caddie is optional at ¥16,500 per group. Golfers rate it 4.7/5 on 18Birdies.

PGM Golf Resort Okinawa and Shurei — the alternatives

PGM's 27 holes above the East China Sea in Onna were renovated to tournament standard in 2017, and a new on-site hotel opened in July 2026. Published weekday fees disagree (about ¥6,800 via Rakuten-based guides, from ¥12,000 via its authorised English booking partner) — budget the range and confirm through the partner. Down south near the airport, Shurei Country Club is the value play from about ¥5,450 on weekdays, 45–50 minutes from Naha.

Booking reality, as everywhere in Japan: Rakuten GORA needs a Japanese address and phone number, so the working routes are resort packages, English booking partners, or your hotel concierge.

The soak, honestly

Kanucha and PGM list no hot spring at all — spa, pool and jacuzzi rooms are the offer, and they are good. But if a real onsen matters (it is half this site's name), end the trip at Ryukyu Onsen Senagajima Hotel: Ryujin no Yu draws a genuine sodium-chloride spring from 1,000 m down, with standing open-air baths facing the sea, open 06:00–24:00. It is the only stop in this plan where we use the word “onsen” without an asterisk.

Access and season

What visitors say

Summarised from English-language sources (TripAdvisor, golfer reviews compiled by Trip to Japan, 18Birdies) — not our own experience. No usable Reddit threads on Okinawa golf surfaced.

Loved: Kanucha's scenery — “Great course with great ocean views.” The resort's spread-out, Hawaiian feel (“so Hawaii in Okinawa” — TripAdvisor), dry February golf when the mainland is freezing, and the new PGM hotel's quiet course-view rooms.

Not loved: value at Kanucha's top day rate — “For 23,000 yens per person, this course was not worth it.” (April 2025, after finding sanded greens undisclosed). English ability at Kanucha is rated just 2.0/5 by one booking site, facilities are ageing in places, there is no free water on the course, and the resort is big enough that you move around it by cart and bus.
